SCLC to Revive National Movement - The Historic Poor People’s CampaignWashington, DC. The Southern Christian Leadership Conference to announce the re-establishment of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s, "Poor People's Campaign". The campaign originally established in 1968 is committed to reduce poverty in targeted areas across America. Leaders of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference gathered in Memphis this week to announce new details about its 51st convention, which is scheduled for Aug. 1-5 in Memphis. The event, which is expected to attract up to 5,000 people, will pay special tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Attending the press conference were (l-r): National SCLC President Rev. Byron Clay named interim head of SCLC
Clay has been involved with SCLC all his life. The Kenner, La., native was first appointed to the civil rights organization’s national board in 1973. At the time, he was just 15 years old. The board in April 2008 named Clay its national vice president. more

Poor People's Campaign BriefIn 1968 The SCLC began preparing for the Poor People’s Campaign. The Poor People’s Campaign was organized around the thought that poverty was the root of inner city violence. The Poor People’s Campaign would push for legislation to guarantee employment, income, and housing for the nation’s economically challenged. more

In the spirit of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) is renewing its commitment to bring about the promise of “one nation, under God, indivisible” together with the commitment to activate the “strength to love” within the community of humankind.
THE ORGANIZATION:
The SCLC is a nonprofit, non-sectarian, inter-faith, advocacy organization that is committed to non-violent action to achieve social, economic, and political justice.

ORGANIZATION FOCUS:
To promote spiritual principles within our membership and local communities;
to educate youth and adults in the areas of personal responsibility, leadership potential, and community service; to ensure economic justice and civil rights in the areas of discrimination and affirmative action; and to eradicate environmental classism and racism wherever it exists.
WHO WE ARE:
The SCLC consists of local chapters and affiliates from around the country that support the organization, and work in their own community to implement national programs such as voter registration, improvement of education and direct action against racial injustice.
The SCLC is made up of Chapters and Affiliates located across the United States. Memberships may be applied for either online, through your chapter association, or individuals can join through the national office.
